delonghi fully automatic espresso machine
From my perspective, there are two types of espresso machines out there for ‘normal’ people (those of us who don’t buy commercial machines): the regular models which range between $100-300 and the prosumer models that start at around $500 and go up from there. The De’Longhi ESAM3300 is definitively in the prosumer category at around $800, and is in a similar league to the Jura 13531 that we reviewed previously.
DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee MachineDepending on what you are coming from, the taste could either be a little better or a lot better. If you are moving from another prosumer-grade espresso machine, then you can expect a good, consistent espresso along the lines of what you have experienced before in a good cafe.
If this is your first machine at the prosumer level, then your’e in for a real treat. The ESAM3300 will blow away your previous espresso maker. The amount of engineering that goes into a machine of this grade is remarkable, and you will get espresso that is much more in line with a good European cafe than what you would get from a Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks.
There are not very many moving parts in this machine, and the settings are relatively simple, so you can control your espresso’s taste to a point. The conical burr grinder does a good job of grinding the beans without too much heat and wasted flavor.
Ease of Use:
The benefit of super-automatic machines like the ESAM3300 is that everything is done for you. You put in the beans, choose your settings, and that’s about it. There are a couple things that you should be careful of when using the machine, such as not using oily or flavored beans in the grinder, as it can hurt it’s long term performance.
If you do want to use flavored beans, then you would need to grind them in another grinder, and add them to the ground bean chute.
One of the secrets to good espresso is to grind your beans when you make your coffee, so you should never get them ground for you and let them lay around for awhile before using.
The ESAM3300 does not have digital controls, which is both a positive and a negative: the controls are manual so there is less that can break, but it makes it more difficult to keep the settings consistent if you are sharing the machine with other people who like their espresso a different way.
As with the Jura 13531, the ESAM3300 is one of the lowest end machines in the De’Longhi ESAM line, which means that it is generally as highly engineered as the higher end machines but without some of the less necessary features, such as a digital display.
If you are interested for a similar De’Longhi machine with a digital display, the ESAM5400, a slightly higher-end model sells for the same price and provides the same quality espresso experience with a digital display and some added features.
Aside from the built in grinder, the ESAM3300 has a cup warmer on the top which is actually very nice to have. A very quick way to make espresso taste worse is to brew it at the right temperature and pressure and immediately dump it into an ice cold cup. The added cup warmer eases that transition from machine to cup and keeps your espresso at the correct temperature for longer.

The ESAM3300 is De’Longhi’s entry level ESAM machine, which means that like the Jura 13531 it is a highly engineered machine with a consistent brewing mechanism. One of the best comparisons that you can make for this machine is with the Jura 13531 and while it’s almost a toss-up between the two, De’Longhi produces a slightly better machine time and again, so if you are considering both, you would do well to go with the 3300 (or the 5400 if you’d like the digital display).
