Grind and Brew Coffee Makers – The best choice?
If you really love coffee, there is nothing better than grinding your coffee beans at home and then freshly brew your coffee. And guess what, there are even grind and brew coffee makers doing that for you. So let’s have a look at these type of coffee machines, how much they cost and if it makes sense to invest in a brewer like that?
If you decide to grind your own coffee, you have many more options for finding your favorite blend of coffee – and probably you going to save some money in the process.
Grind and Brew Coffee Makers vs capsules
I own a Jura Nespresso machine, and while the coffee (espresso) is superb, it comes with a price tag, lots of aluminum (every year it is said Nepresso ships more aluminum to customers with the capsules than needed to rebuild the Statue of Liberty).
And aluminum is a metal which needs a lot of energy to be employed. So there is an ecological downside to my favorite choice. But the coffee is fresh as if it were grinded at home.
So now, back to the home grind & brew Coffee machines: While you can get a grinder and a coffee machine separately, many companies are offering a combo product, where you just fill in the beans, put a coffee cup underneath the nozzle, press the button and just wait for your freshly brewed coffee.
Sounds great! So it seems next time I am in the market a grind and brew Coffee Maker will be my “cup of tea”.
But, and there is a “but”, if you feel the same you should do some research beforehand. What I hear most is that the steam from the brewer sometimes soars into the coffee bean case, making them wet.
And what most complaints are about is that the grinder is hard to be cleaned. See, the grinder pulverizes the beans and turns them into coffee powder. And especially if the beans were wet, this powder will adhere to the mill and so deteriorate the grinding process.
Cleaning these grinders is quite a chore, so it makes sense to first read the reviews of customers before you decide on one of the grind and brew coffee makers available.

One of the best rated brands is Breville. At the time of this writing it’s product “Breville BDC600XL” It comes with 3.8 stars (out of a maximum of 5) and over 20 reviews.
Even the most valuable negative review (2 star review) says about this coffee machine that “It’s fairly easy to clean up and it’s very easy to program and use.”.

Until these machines merging Grinder and Coffee Maker were offered, many of us were happy to use a separate coffee mill to produce fresh coffee powder from the beans. And then put that powder into their coffee machine. This has some benefits. Firstly, if the grinder breaks (or the coffee machine) you can more easily replace the machine than if you bought a Grind & Brew Coffee machine. And especially the mill is often hard to clean and can easily break.
Get a protection plan
If you buy a combination of both in one coffee maker, you have to replace the whole machine, while it is easy to just buy a new coffee grinder.
But, and this is a big one, it is less convenient. Some coffee powder will spill when putting it into the coffee machine, and you have two steps instead of just one. So for many the combination of both functions in one machine will be the best choice.
And with the reviewing comments on Amazon it is fairly easy to find out if an appliance breaks easily or not. And there is another step you can take to make sure that your investment is safe. In countries with a short guarantee (less than 2 years) you should also think about getting an extra protection plan. So if the appliance breaks, your investment is safe. I would always protect it for 3 years.
So when you decide on your next coffee machine, make sure that the reviews say that the cleaning of the grinder is fairly easy and the appliance reliable. Then think about an extra protection plan. And you will enjoy your new coffee and appliance for years to come.
